NewsFilm Online Launch: 3rd October 2008

A team from the University of Hull (Kevin Burden; Theo Kuechel and Simon Atkinson) attended the official launch of the JISC funded Newsfilm Online archive containing over 3000 hours collection of News item (60,000) clips dating back to 1900 (www.nfo.ac.uk).

As you would expect, the clips cover the great and significant moments in 20th, and (some 21st century history), but perhaps even more importantly illustrates, visually, a snapshot of the 'everyday'; the impermanent transience of life and society at that given time. The team from the University of Hull were responsible for the development of the assisted take-up project, designed to encourage academics to use the archive video stories. Our assisted take up materials pull together, three distinct strands.

  • A pedagogical framework based on DiAL-e (Digital Artefacts for Learner Engagement – DiAL-e).
  • Practical support and guidance for engaging with the archive featuring a large number of video screencasts.
  • A facility and tools for users to contribute to discussions and upload the resources and learning activities they have created.

The assisted take-up materials are freely available and can be located at the following address: http://213.133.67.199/JISC/index.php

Further details about the resource can be found in the following news article: http://escalate.ac.uk/5723
