The EduTubePlus multilingual curriculum-related ontology: Decisions

The development of a suitable multilingual ontology of curriculum-related terms was considered an important aspect of the EduTubePlus system, as it would enable teachers and pupils navigate and find multicultural video resources using terms related to their national curricula in their native language.

After an extended survey of the existing controlled vocabularies and school-based thesauri conducted by CEDETEL and RACTI, EduTubePlus project partners decided to use the EUN LRE Thesaurus as a basis for the EduTubePlus ontology. This controlled vocabulary of school-based terms, currently available in 9 of the 11 EduTubePlus languages, is recommended by the EUN LRE Application Profile of IEEE LOM. To meet the EduTubePlus goals, it was also decided to translate the EUN LRE Thesaurus into two additional languages, Romanian and Portuguese, covering thus all 11 languages of the EduTubePlus consortium and to extend it with new terms (e.g. persons, events, etc addressed by the national curricula of participating countries) in order to enhance the multilingual search mechanism.
