Jyväskylän yliopisto; The University Of Jyväskylä / Dept: Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius (JY/Chydenius)

The Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius is an independent university-level teaching and research unit located in the region of Central Ostrobothnia (Finland) that is affiliated to the University of Jyväskylä that operates under the auspices of the universities of Jyväskylä, Oulu and Vaasa. It is devoted in particular to supporting the material and intellectual growth of its own region by means of education and research and to improving the inhabitants' access to university-level teaching, partly on a networking principle. The institute provides teaching and research facilities aimed at promoting development at the individual and community levels, and thereby also at the regional level. All the services provided by the institute are based on the notion of life-long learning and development from both the individual and the organizational perspective.

The Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, in cooperation with the Faculty of Education at the University of Jyväskylä, arranges continuation courses leading to the degree of Master of Education and qualification as a junior school teacher. These courses are particularly aimed at persons studying through the Open University, those contemplating a change of career and those changing the emphasis of their studies in education. Following the principles of life-long learning, the courses are constantly being developed to match the needs of individual students and the changing demands of society at large. The main principles lying behind the teaching are the use of multiple study media and the development of student-centred, open learning environments on a networking basis.

The Continuing Education Unit provides services for individuals, companies and corporate bodies that comprise the instruments necessary for developing their own work, organization and operating environment. These involve flexible alternative means of gaining the extra knowledge required for coping with the changing demands of working life, implemented according to the principles of multimode teaching and collaborative learning and good development ethics. Continuing education of this kind is available in the fields of teaching and education, social work and health, and for both companies and corporate bodies of other kinds. Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius is functioning as an international networking university-level institution for mature students, providing teaching and research facilities that are independent of time and place by virtue of its advanced use of information technology.
